What you ought to know about Fitness and Health
is that they contain similar properties but are really two different concepts. Health refers to the absence
of disease and Fitness refers to the degree of body functioning and the ability of the body to handle physical
demands. The more efficient the body functions, the higher the level of fitness. The higher the level of fitness, the greater
the chance the body will be free of disease and maintain a healthy state. Fitness is a major part of a preventative medicine
approach to health. Hence the reason you need to start thinking fitness and health
today.
Physical Fitness is feeling well physically and mentally, having the stamina and energy to perform
your daily tasks without becoming fatigued, and maintaining that energy throughout your life.
Have you achieved that goal? If you haven’t, you need to contact
me so that I can start you on your way to a better and healthier you.
The Five Components of Physical Fitness
1. Muscular Strength is the force a muscle or muscle group can exert when flexed. When you pick up an object,
you use the biceps to exert a force against gravity. Muscular strength is important in standing up, sitting down, lifting
and carrying etc.
2. Muscular Endurance is measured by the length of time you can continually exert a muscular force, or by
the number of contractions the muscle can withstand before becoming fatigued. Walking, standing or gardening are all tests
for muscular endurance.
3. Cardiovascular Endurance, also called aerobic fitness, is a measure of the hearts stamina. It refers
to the ability of the heart and lungs to deliver oxygen and blood to the muscles during exercise. Poor cardiovascular endurance
can have a detrimental impact on your life, rendering you tired and immobile.
4. Flexibility is the measure of your joints range of motion. Adequate flexibility allows us to touch our toes and cross
our legs. It gives you mobility and reduces our risk of injury. Often overlooked, flexibility is one of the key components
to physical fitness.
5. Body Composition is the ratio of lean body mass to fat. Lean body mass refers to muscle, bone, nerve
tissue skin and organs. Lean tissue is metabolically active which means it needs more fuel to maintain its activity than fat.
Because muscle weighs more than fat it is important to measure body composition rather then body weight when evaluating fitness.
A desirable amount of body fat is between 8 and 15 percent for men and 15 to 22 percent for women.
Losing weight is not as easy as it sounds on
TV diet commercials. It takes a lot more commitment than just eating that so-call delicious shake for breakfast and buying
that abdominal machine, it takes time and dedication. Sometimes we get so caught up in the big race toward our ideal weight
loss that we forget that we get to the finish line one step at a time.
Take action and make a commitment today to accomplish your fitness goals. Your future is determined
by the decisions you make today!
